Questions
Things people often ask
When is my tax return due?
For most people, April 30. If you or your spouse are self-employed, you have until June 15 to file, but any balance owing is still due April 30. Corporations file six months after their fiscal year-end.
What happens if I file late?
If you owe money, CRA charges a penalty of 5% of the balance plus 1% for each full month you're late, up to 12 months, as well as daily interest. If you're getting a refund or benefits, filing late delays them. Either way, it's better to file now than to wait.
I had no income. Do I still need to file?
Usually yes. Benefits like the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit and the BC family benefit are calculated from your return, so not filing can mean not receiving them.
Can you file returns from previous years?
Yes. Bass Accounting regularly catches people up on missed years, and can request the slips CRA already has on file for you.
How long should I keep my records?
CRA asks you to keep supporting documents for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to. We can tell you what's worth keeping and what isn't.
Do I need to come into the office?
Not necessarily. Many clients send documents by email and review their return over the phone. Call to arrange whatever works for you.
